What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside the tooth. When the soft tissue, known as the dental pulp, becomes damaged or infected, treatment may be needed to prevent the problem from progressing.

During an RCT, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and the root canals are sealed. The tooth can then be restored to help bring back its strength, appearance, and normal function.

💡 Why Save Your Natural Tooth?

When possible, preserving your natural tooth can help maintain normal chewing function and avoid the need for extraction and tooth replacement.

When Might You Need an RCT?

  • Persistent or severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the stimulus is removed
  • Deep tooth decay reaching the pulp
  • A cracked, fractured, or injured tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness around the affected tooth
  • Infection around the root of a tooth

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Restore Your Smile

After appropriate restoration, the treated tooth can return to normal function.

Root Canal Treatment Process

  1. Dental Examination: Your dentist evaluates the tooth and may recommend dental X-rays to assess the problem.
  2. Local Anaesthesia: The area is numbed to help keep you comfortable during the procedure.
  3. Access & Cleaning: An opening is made in the tooth and the affected pulp is removed.
  4. Canal Disinfection: The root canals are carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
  5. Sealing: The cleaned canals are filled and sealed to help prevent further infection.
  6. Final Restoration: Depending on the tooth and its condition, a filling or dental crown may be recommended to restore strength and function.
🪥 Aftercare

Follow your dentist's instructions, maintain regular brushing and flossing, attend recommended follow-up visits, and avoid putting excessive pressure on the treated tooth until its final restoration is completed.
